Thunder in the Valley - Crowsnest Pass

This weekend Mom and Dad graciously allowed me to join them for five days in the Crowsnest Pass for the annual fire hall fundraiser, Thunder in the Valley. What started 16 years ago as a small up-do for the fire department has turned into a 30 minute fireworks extravaganza that is cause for a full week of camping and celebration in the small town of Blairmore, AB.

We made the drive three hours South West of home on Thursday evening, and pursued many activities throughout the course of our four days in the Crowsnest Pass.

Dad "drowned worms" in the Crowsnest River.

We waited out a thunder storm in Tim Horton's, hoping it would pass over before returning to our tents... it did. Then another arrived on its heels.

Our camping spot was ideal. We settled in a small clearing off a quadding trail just a few kilometers up the Allison Creek road towards Chinook Lake after finding ALL the official camping spots full. Many people braved it in town, even along the railway track. For this weekend, it is fully acceptable to camp on any public green space you can find. If you can find a spot not already occupied by temporary abodes.
The parade Saturday morning was perfectly "small town", if you know what I mean. Here are a few of the highlights:
Shriner's Circus gets wild!Without competition, the best part of the parade was the kids.

Okay, maybe firemen on sport bikes is competition.

On the count of three, everyone toss your glow-things!

Yay, fireworks! We parked on the outskirts of town at 6:00 pm. We set up chairs in the park at 6:30 pm. The firworks started at 11:00 pm. They were worth it!
Sunday afternoon was spent near Pincher Creek at a wind farm enjoying the sun and the wind!

Mom helped Dad put up his stunt kite to play with the wind mills.
What a weekend!
