#41: Beauty in the Midst of Chaos

Shortly after Christmas I was scrambling to get my classroom pulled together before the morning arrival of my students. My desk was strewn with paperwork, but a steaming cup of Tim Horton’s coffee was keeping my company. Looking up, my south facing classroom window perfectly framed a sunrise that so clearly matched a poem my grade 9 class was studying that I took a second look…

The grey begins to fade,

As colour creeps from leaf to limb.

The light is slowly seeping up,

From beneath the earth's curved rim.

The sky blue strengthens slowly,

Glazed with hues of orange and red.

Slowly as the earth revolves,

The sun lifts up it's head.

Colours shimmer in the light

And shapes begin to unveil.

The trees and flowers separate,

With the dawn light rosy and pale.

The sun climbs higher in the sky.

It's light shimmering and warm.

All things now are clearly seen.

A new day has been born.

After my moment of awe, I managed to upload a photo to my computer and share the match with the grade nine students. “I need to get up earlier, I guess,” was the response when I answered a student query about where the photo had been taken.
